Attitude, Skill, Knowledge(A.S.K)

There are three things that a diabetic educator should remember in order to educate Diabetic patients efficiently. These are: Attitude, Skill, and Knowledge. This means that the diabetic educator should be able to teach difficult concepts to the patient using easy vocabulary and lots of patience.

Many diabetic patients do not try to learn proper ways to handling their health, but are dazzled with simple, easy and misleading information. If the diabetic patient does not control properly for a long period of time, then s/he will suffer painful complications.
The family of the patient will also face negative consequences.
The public loses as well because the patient cannot work and must be supported by funds. Thus, health professionals are concerned about diabetic patients and are always preparing education all the time. Pharmacists especially meet patients very often, so they should be prepared to teach whenever patients ask questions. The three words in ASK will makepatients healthy, as well as develop the pharmacy business.

- The reason why we need Diabetes education

Only 5% of diabetic patients see medical professionals (foot doctors, eye doctors, dieticians) regularly in America. Under 10% of diabetic patients receive proper diabetic education.
More than 60% of patients do not perform blood or urine tests.
The rest of the patients, although they perform tests, do not do it regularly or efficiently. Many patients using insulin make errors measuring their insulin dosage. These statistics show that patients need to be educated. Early diagnosis and proper understanding of Diabetes through education are the best ways to benefit patients and save the government's medical funds.
